Southern Baptist leader: If Obama mandate isn’t changed, Christians will go to jail

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, February 8, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – One of the most influential evangelical leaders in the United States says Christians should go to jail rather than comply with the Obama administration’s mandate to provide all contraception, including abortion-inducing drugs, in their health care plans.

Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), told LifeSiteNews.com “we will not comply” with the Dept. of Health and Human Services’ mandate requiring religious institutions to cover abortifacient products such as Plan B, Ella, and the IUD.

“We want the law changed, or else we’re going to write our letters from the Nashville jail, just like Dr. King wrote his from the Birmingham jail,” Dr. Land said.

Dr. Richard Land

Dr. Land wrote an op-ed on Tuesday with Barrett Duke, vice president for public policy and research at ERLC, calling his fellow Southern Baptists and evangelical Christians throughout America to oppose any infringement on the First Amendment.

“The Obama administration has declared war on religion and freedom of conscience,” they wrote. “We consider this callous requirement by the Obama administration to be a clear violation of our nation’s commitment to liberty of conscience and a flagrant violation of our constitutional protection to freedom of religion.”

Dr. Land told LifeSiteNews he hopes Baptist ministers will “preach from the pulpit just how serious and dangerous this initiative by the Obama administration is,” and “encourage their parishioners to contact their congressmen and their senators and the president and let them know how deeply unhappy they are with this decision, and they want…legislation guaranteeing that it won’t happen again.”

“It is now in the providence of God,” Dr. Land said. “Our responsibility is to stand and say, ‘We will not comply with this. We want the law changed, or else we’re going to write our letters from the Nashville jail, just like Dr. King wrote his from the Birmingham jail.’ We will not comply.”

Dr. Land, who earned a Doctorate of Philosophy from Oxford University, has been named by Time magazine as one of “The Twenty-five Most Influential Evangelicals in America.”

President Obama’s recess appointment of Chai Feldblum to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) provided an insight to the president’s views, Dr. Land said. Feldblum has said whenever religious rights come into conflict with sexual rights, that sexual rights must prevail. “That’s exactly what’s happening in the Health and Human Services contraceptive and abortifacient directive,” he said. “They are saying that a woman’s right to have free contraceptive services and free abortifacients trumps the deeply held religious convictions of Catholics and Baptists and others. That’s a war on religion.”

Several of the Obama administration’s actions have convinced observers the president harbors an aversion to Christian values. “I do know hostility to religious conviction in the public square when I see it, and I see it in the Hosanna case,” in which the Obama administration attempted to narrowly define the ministerial exemption in hiring, Dr. Land told LifeSiteNews.com. He called the Obama administration “radically secularist” on his weekly radio program.

The op-ed he co-authored came exactly one week after Dr. Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said evangelical Christians may be required to face imprisonment over the issue. Dr. Mohler said in his daily podcast, “You at least have to admire the courage of the Roman Catholic bishops in saying they are willing to go to jail rather than to comply with this. How many evangelical presidents and pastors and leaders would be willing to do the same?”

“We’re going to find out in coming months,” he warned.

He said despite media coverage portraying the new regulation as a Catholic issue, “evangelicals need to stand back and – in our own terms, on our own doctrine – understand that our religious liberty is being similarly subverted and attacked.”

Government encroachments on religion have long concerned Dr. Land. Last December, he joined 59 other non-Catholic religious leaders in signing a letter to Barack Obama stating, “religious organizations beyond the Catholic community have deep moral objections to a requirement that their health insurance plans must cover abortifacients.”

Dr. Land and Duke noted in their op-ed that the government protects other Christians from violating their consciences by exempting pacifists from serving in the military, but “the administration is refusing to allow those who believe that abortion is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being to follow faithfully the dictates of his or her conscience on a matter as grave as the death of an unborn child.”

“A person who is not free to follow the dictates of his or her moral conscience is not free,” they wrote. “Our Baptist forebears died and went to prison to secure these freedoms.”

In the upcoming presidential election, Dr. Land hoped faithful voters would consider the importance of religious liberty. “This is a very serious and defining moment in American society,” he said.

The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, withmore than16 million members and 45,000 churches in the United States.

The more I study the Obama Administration, the more I conclude that God’s purpose is being fulfilled through the President. It’s a judgement for America and a wake up call for the majority of us Christians. Too many Christians have been more and more comfortable with secular society and accept practices based on popularity and polls rather than based only on the Word of God. It is God who allows who becomes Presiden t(Romans 13:1-2), and I’m glad to hear reports like this where Christian leaders are ready to go to prison for Godly principles. Great leadership must be imitated and supported. Great article.

Wow am I seeing black folk waking up? I hope it spreads.

    • RT

I hope it spreads also, because MOST do not know what’s really going on. The only way to do so is to spread the news to everyone that you know, via facebook, emails, text, tweet and face to face. PRAY!

  3. Rob

It’s the sound of alarm……TIME TO WAKE UP!!!! Church has been in a slumber………

Love the good news! I thank God for fellow soldiers.

  7. I pray for our leaders and want them to do well for the sake of this Nation. However, it appears that President Obama is setting the stage for his reelection at the expense of values and moral standards (e.g. support of LGBT agenda, repeal of DADT, promotion of Planned Parenthood, etc). I ask what else will America have to compromise in order to meet the selfish agendas of world leaders.

Help me understand this, God put him into office? Didnt we by voting for him? I voted for him out of ignorance, I was not saved then so I voted because he was well, black. However since I have been exposed to EX Ministries, light has been shed and I am learning things about it that I do not like. I will not vote for him in this election, I know that many of our ppl will, even church ppl. I thought I heard a preacher say that “We put them into office and why blame them?” Not trying to start an arguement, Im trying to understand how God put him there if we the ppl voted him in. For the record I do not believe in abortion and I will not cosign on this so called womens rights agenda or whatever. But it seems to be more like a religious liberty agenda. I believe if they cave, it will only be the beginning point to tell pastors what they can and cant preach on Sunday mornings….

    • Naiym

I agree with you… WE had/have dominion on these issues and THEY ( not me cause i didn’t dare go near the Obama vote button) put him office…. God simply let us use our free will, and as the Bible say we got the King we deserved..

    • ivan brunson

God didnt necessarily put him in office but at the same time, this is not taking God by surprise. He is omniscient.

    • SamJ

I would say that God allowed President Obama into power for His purpose – probably judgement and warning to America.

Lord please let America see this man for who he really is ?

I a black American man, who happens to be a minister. You see all these Pastors, Evangelists, and Preachers who ingnored Canidate Obama’s agenda in his speeches are eating Crow now!

They didn’t what to hear any negative truth about Obama’s abortion and gay agenda even as late as in 2011. But the chickens are coming home to roost now.

How in the world to you admit that you were dead wrong in the pulpit if you are a Pastor? Just because he was black, they gave him a pass. Now he is on the Attack to the ones he used to get there.

I guess the lesson in this is, pay attention to what people are saying in between the lines and even sometimes openly. Republican, Democrate, or Independent. The Elites in control are in control of all parties to a great degree.

I hope this helps some preacher to go back and admit he/she was wrong for promoting Canidate Obama to the Level of Dr. Martin Luther King.

I’ve said from the very beginning that just because we share like complexion does not mean that we are automatically. Alike in our mind and hearts. I am pro Christ all the way,and President Obama is not. That’s it in a nut shell. Bless u.

  12. Bensy

Amen. Whether people or some of us voted for Obama or not, as christians we should still stand against wickedness and sin that he’s encouraging. I commend Dr. Land for taking the step of faith and standing for holiness and righteousness.

  13. Phil

I hate to turn this into a racial issue, because at the end of the day it’s about souls and not race, but I still wonder how many black preachers/Pastors/Bishops are gonna comply to this.

    • Theresa Louis (@Use_Wisdom)

I can understand why you say that. And yes it is not a racial issue but unfortunately, a lot of minorities tend to buckle under pressure and it’s sad but the truth. My prayer is that despite race, the Body of Christ as a whole, will stand together for holiness.

    • Naiym

A LOT ..They want in..and they think this half African descent president is their ticket in…The man could probably display a public orgy and black folks will blindly support him.

  14. La Shawn Blackston

I didn’t know Obama bill included providing the Plan B pill…am I understanding this correctly?

  15. someguy

I understand that he’s trying to make a good stand here, but i think he’s wrong. It’s “Ceasar’s” face on the money. He needs to give to Ceasar what is Ceasar’s, no matter how wicked Ceasar might be. Jesus didn’t say, if the government handles the money well, give it to them. He said give it to them. Who put Obama in office? God did. There is no government set up that God has not established. This pastor, as great as his motives may be, needs to obey the Word.

    • mike

You have absolutely no understanding of that passage of scripture. So i guess when pharaoh in Egypt ordered all the male Israelite infants to be killed, the israelite’s should should have complied right? after all God set up that government! Or when the apostles in the NT were ordered not to preach Christ and were thrown in jail multiple times because of it, they should have obeyed the government because they’re ordained of God right? If we are ordered to do something that’s contrary to the word of God we are not to obey it. You need to get your head out of obama’s rear and open your eyes! God had nothing to do with him being in office.

    • Theresa Louis (@Use_Wisdom)

There is a fine line that can be crossed by what you stated. Give to Ceasar what belongs to him and Give to God what belongs to God. But Jesus never told his followers to compromise His Word for Cesar either. There is always wisdom needed in situations like this. I commend Dr. Land for standing on the Word of God even when the Government says to do otherwise. In the end, Dr. Land will have to answer to God. I’d rather answer God saying I did what you told me to and not “they made me do it!”

    • Stephanieb

I kind of see your point someguy, but I am still not clear as to why you think this pastor and other Christians should not stand up against this.

    • Standing Strong

Someguy, what about the Old Testament story of the children of Israel wanting a “King” that they can see. They practically begged God until He gave them what they wanted. In short, they got Saul and did not like it when he started to treat them wrong. God gave the people what they wanted. Sometimes we should be careful of the things we want especially if it doesn’t line up with the Word of God. I believe that God is teaching/reminding us to get down on our knees and pray and fast because we need to constantly hear Him (Holy Spirit) when He speaks to us. I praise God for every person that stands up against the people who are directly going against God. Lord have mercy on us.

  16. redeemed

    Kudos to Dr. Land!

  17. Taura Helms

Why is it that some people defend this as women’s rights? This is not something the church should be involved in. By the way, Pray for Washington State. They just passed gay marriage in this state. Have mercy.

  18. Cherylock

The lines have been drawn, the persecution begins. Let’s see the pastors who will stand for God now.

  19. Jessica

This man is totally anti-GOD! Anything that even looks like God, he hates and will try to destroy. Perfect puppet.
