Error of Man: Pastor nixed from Obama inaugural over anti-gay remarks

by

By Ali Weinberg and Andrew Mach, NBC News
A pastor chosen by President Obama to deliver the inaugural benediction later this month has withdrawn amid controversy over anti-gay remarks he made more than a decade ago.
In a mid-1990s sermon, Rev. Louie Giglio, an Atlanta minister and founder of the Passion Conferences, a group dedicated to uniting students in worship and prayer, advocated for “ex-gay” therapy and urged listeners to prevent the “homosexual lifestyle” from becoming accepted.
He also invoked a biblical passage often interpreted to require gay people to be executed and argued that homosexuals choose to be gay.
“People aren’t born gay – but even if they are, it’s still a choice like giving into alcoholism, addiction and overeating,” Giglio said in a 54-minute sermon called “In Search of a Standard – Christian Response to Homosexuality.”
In a statement, Giglio said he was withdrawing from the inaugural because staying in would not best serve his core message.
“Due to a message of mine that has surfaced from 15-20 years ago, it is likely that my participation and the prayer I would offer will be dwarfed by those seeking to make their agenda the focal point of the inauguration,” Giglio said. “Clearly, speaking on this issue has not been in the range of my priorities in the past fifteen years. Instead, my aim has been to call people to ultimate significance as we make much of Jesus Christ.”
Whisenant said that even though the committee vets a number of people to deliver the benediction, they were only recently made aware of his comments when they surfaced on ThinkProgress, a left-leaning political blog. He stressed that it was Giglio’s decision to withdraw his name.
Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, an advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights, lauded Giglio’s removal.
“It was the right decision,” Griffen wrote in an email Thursday. “Participants in the Inaugural festivities should unite rather than divide. Choosing an affirming and fair-minded voice as his replacement would be in keeping with the tone the president wants to set for his Inaugural.”
In 2009, Obama chose Rev. Rick Warren to give the invocation, drawing outcry from some on the left because of Warren’s opposition to same-sex marriage.

The pastor didn’t stand up. He backed down. By his own words, preaching against homosexuality has not been a focus over the past 15 years. All in a time where homosexuality has exploded.

abnormal has become normal, its now become controversial for a pastor to be against sodomy.

While EVERYONE is focusing on the pastor, The Anti-Christ (Obama) and most of other presidents b4 him are getting a free pass to “DO AS THOU WILT.”

Because Gods people are to busy pointing figures at each other..!!!

Obama worship turns stupid making Christians turn on their own.

    By Mario Murillo:

Franklin Graham behaved with wisdom and mercy when he appeared on The Morning Joe on MSNBC. He did so in the face of an unfair gotcha question from the host. The question was, “Do you think that Obama is a Christian?”

Let me tell you that I would not have come close, not by a solar system, to Franklin’s wise answer and yet he was still castigated by not just the usual suspects but by Christians!

Here is what Peter Wehner, said in his article entitled Franklin Graham’s Troubling Theology.

“On Tuesday, Reverend Franklin Graham gave an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that created a bit of a stir among the political class. At the core of the controversy is what Graham said about President Obama’s Christianity.

When asked directly if the president was a Christian, Graham said, “He’s come out saying that he’s a Christian. The question is, What is a Christian?” At another point Graham said, “If he says he’s a Christian, I’m not going to say he’s not.” But when faced with this direct statement — “So therefore, by your definition, [Obama’s] not a Christian” – the Reverend Graham answered, “You have to ask him. I cannot answer that question for anybody.”

Huh??? How is any of what you just read troubling theology? Not only did he acquit himself with wisdom, not even his father Billy, in his prime, could have given a better answer.

Franklin’s crime is that he did not feel anything warm running down his leg about Obama’s Christianity. He did not join the chorus of Obama worship. We have now come to the place where even not judging Obama is considered judging Obama.

Lost in all of this is the obvious. The question is: what would you or I would do if the public was wondering if we were Christian? Here are a couple of verses to consider before you answer that question.

1 Corinthians 8:3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

1 John 5:2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world.

It would horrify me to think that people were wondering if knew and loved Jesus and I would immediately do whatever was necessary to settle the question.

You do not become a Christian by attending church anymore that you become a policeman by walking into a donut shop. Unless of course, you are Barrack Obama who has been given a pass on virtually anything he says or does.

Obama was given a Noble Peace Prize because of what they thought he would do. It is a miracle that the NCAA did not give him the Heisman Trophy because he watched a bowl game. Now Christians turn on other Christians because they will not give a ringing endorsement of Obama’s “relationship with Jesus.”???? Wake up people!

    • stephanieb Says:

great post, and I think too that Franklin Graham gave a great answer! If you gotta ask somebody if a person is a Christian, then there must be some doubt that they are, right? That’s what Graham should have told him too!

    • Bea K. Says:

Truth be told I don’t think Obama knows what he is, because while he continues to tell the public, “I’m a christian”, he lauds just about everything to do with being a Muslim, but barely mentions anything at all to do with Christianity. Am I surprised by any of this, absolutely, positively NOT, for just like putting on a new pair of shoes, etc. “being a christian” seems to be the ‘it’ thing to be now (NOT for all but definitely some).
Also, while Graham said, “If he says he’s a Christian, I’m not going to say he’s not”, something must have drastically changed here because that’s NOT what he said not that long ago, when he was questioning whether or not Obama truly was one. Once again, I just wonder what changed here??

The Giglio Imbroglio — The Public Inauguration of a New Moral McCarthyism
    Thursday, January 10, 2013
    Albert Mohler

A new chapter in America’s moral revolution came today as Atlanta pastor Louie Giglio withdrew from giving the benediction at President Obama’s second inaugural ceremony. In a statement released to the White House and the Presidential Inaugural Committee, Giglio said that he withdrew because of the furor that emerged yesterday after a liberal watchdog group revealed that almost twenty years ago he had preached a sermon in which he had stated that homosexuality is a sin and that the “only way out of a homosexual lifestyle … is through the healing power of Jesus.”

In other words, a Christian pastor has been effectively disinvited from delivering an inaugural prayer because he believes and teaches Christian truth.
The fact that Giglio was actually disinvited was made clear in a statement from Addie Whisenant of the Presidential Inaugural Committee:

“We were not aware of Pastor Giglio’s past comments at the time of his selection, and they don’t reflect our desire to celebrate the strength and diversity of our country at this inaugural. Pastor Giglio was asked to deliver the benediction in large part because of his leadership in combating human trafficking around the world. As we now work to select someone to deliver the benediction, we will ensure their beliefs reflect this administration’s vision of inclusion and acceptance for all Americans.”

That statement is, in effect, an embarrassed apology for having invited Louie Giglio in the first place. Whisenant’s statement apologizes for the Presidential Inaugural Committee’s failure to make certain that their selection had never, at any time, for any reason, believed that homosexuality is less than a perfectly acceptable lifestyle. The committee then promised to repent and learn from their failure, committing to select a replacement who would “reflect this administration’s vision of inclusion and acceptance.”

The imbroglio over Louie Giglio is the clearest evidence of the new Moral McCarthyism of our sexually “tolerant” age. During the infamous McCarthy hearings, witnesses would be asked, “Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?”

In the version now to be employed by the Presidential Inaugural Committee, the question will be: “Are you now or have you ever been one who believes that homosexuality (or bisexuality, or transsexualism, etc.) is anything less than morally acceptable and worthy of celebration?”

Louie Giglio, pastor of Atlanta’s Passion City Church, is also founder of the Passion movement that brings tens of thousands of Christian young people together to hear Giglio, along with speakers such as John Piper. They urge a rising generation of young Christians to make a passionate commitment to Christ. In recent years, the movement has also sought to raise awareness and activism among young Christians on the issue of sex trafficking. It was that activism that caught the attention of both President Obama and the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

Note carefully that both the White House and the committee were ready to celebrate Giglio’s activism on sex trafficking, but all that was swept away by the Moral McCarthyism on the question of homosexuality.

Two other dimensions of this story also demand attention. First, we should note that Louie Giglio has not been known lately for taking any stand on the issue of homosexuality. To the contrary, Giglio’s own statement withdrawing from the invitation made this clear:

“Due to a message of mine that has surfaced from 15-20 years ago, it is likely that my participation, and the prayer I would offer, will be dwarfed by those seeking to make their agenda the focal point of the inauguration. Clearly, speaking on this issue has not been in the range of my priorities in the past fifteen years. Instead, my aim has been to call people to ultimate significance as we make much of Jesus Christ.”

A fair-minded reading of that statement indicates that Pastor Giglio has strategically avoided any confrontation with the issue of homosexuality for at least fifteen years. The issue “has not been in the range of my priorities,” he said. Given the Bible’s insistance that sexual morality is inseparable from our “ultimate significance as we make much of Jesus Christ,” this must have been a difficult strategy. It is also a strategy that is very attractive to those who want to avoid being castigated as intolerant or homophobic. As this controversy makes abundantly clear, it is a failed strategy. Louie Giglio was cast out of the circle of the acceptable simply because a liberal watchdog group found one sermon he preached almost twenty years ago. If a preacher has ever taken a stand on biblical conviction, he risks being exposed decades after the fact. Anyone who teaches at any time, to any degree, that homosexual behavior is a sin is now to be cast out.

Second, we should note that Pastor Giglio’s sermon was, as we would expect and hope, filled with grace and the promise of the Gospel. Giglio did not just state that homosexuals are sinners — he made clear that every single human being is a sinner, in need of the redemption that is found only in Jesus Christ. “We’ve got to say to the homosexuals, the same thing that I say to you and that you would say to me … It’s not easy to change, but it’s possible to change,” he preached. He pointed his congregation, gay and straight, to “the healing power of Jesus.” He called his entire congregation to repent and come to Christ by faith.

That is the quintessential Christian Gospel. That is undiluted biblical truth. Those words are the consensus of the Church for over 2,000 years, and the firm belief held by the vast majority of Christians around the world today.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee and the White House have now declared historic, biblical Christianity to be out of bounds, casting it off the inaugural program as an embarrassment. By its newly articulated standard, any preacher who holds to the faith of the church for the last 2,000 years is persona non grata. By this standard, no Roman Catholic prelate or priest can participate in the ceremony. No Evangelical who holds to biblical orthodoxy is welcome. The vast majority of Christians around the world have been disinvited. Mormons, and the rabbis of Orthodox Judaism are out. Any Muslim imam who could walk freely in Cairo would be denied a place on the inaugural program. Billy Graham, who participated in at least ten presidential inaugurations is welcome no more. Rick Warren, who incited a similar controversy when he prayed at President Obama’s first inauguration, is way out of bounds. In the span of just four years, the rules are fully changed.

The gauntlet was thrown down yesterday, and the axe fell today. Wayne Besen, founder of the activist group Truth Wins Out, told The New York Times yesterday: “It is imperative that Giglio clarify his remarks and explain whether he has evolved on gay rights, like so many other faith and political leaders. It would be a shame to select a preacher with backward views on LBGT people at a moment when the nation is rapidly moving forward on our issues.”

And there you have it — anyone who has ever believed that homosexuality is morally problematic in any way must now offer public repentance and evidence of having “evolved” on the question. This is the language that President Obama used of his own “evolving” position on same-sex marriage. This is what is now openly demanded of Christians today. If you want to avoid being thrown off the program, you had better learn to evolve fast, and repent in public.

This is precisely what biblical Christians cannot do. While seeking to be gentle in spirit and ruthlessly Gospel-centered in speaking of any sin, we cannot cease to speak of sin as sin. To do so is not only to deny the authority of Scripture, not only to reject the moral consensus of the saints, but it undermines the Gospel itself. The Gospel makes no sense, and is robbed of its saving power, if sin is denied as sin.

An imbroglio is a painful and embarrassing conflict. The imbroglio surrounding Louie Giglio is not only painful, it is revealing. We now see the new Moral McCarthyism in its undisguised and unvarnished reality. If you are a Christian, get ready for the question you will now undoubtedly face: “Do you now or have you ever believed that homosexuality is a sin?” There is nowhere to hide.

  6. SoSpression Says:

If we stood against sin like preachers of the past, risking our own lives let alone our reputation… The sex slave problem would be very small. Instead we choose to raise money and avoid rocking the boat.

  7. SoSpression Says:

How’s that for trying to be a “light” to the world. Now not only do they
    1. avoid preaching what brings conviction of sin, only choosing to stand for what raises money
    2. But also, if there is any chance of controversy, the next move is to totally back off from something that could potentially “shine the light”

So now even the “evangelists” don’t evangelize if the worlds boat might get rocked a little?

Where is the God of Elijah?

  8. alex Says:

So he was nixed, God be Praised, we can’t be associated with the hidden adenda of the Obama administration.

  9. kerry Says:

that he excepted the invitation to pray for the president, speaks volume about him. The fact that had not preached against the sin of homosexuality, because it was not a piroity wow. Where in the bible does it say we take a break from preaching agaisnt sin. His priorities was get funding for his work against human traficing, which is how Obama met him. It is a noble cause but there is more power in the word of God than in money you get from government. Rev 21:8 We must stand on the word and defend the faith or our part will be inthe lake of fire.

  10. elderls Says:

No true Christian should be associated with #44 or his inaguration. Can’t serve two masters. Can’t worship Almighty God of the Holy Scriptures and that reprobate #44. We can’t dumbdown the Word of God…”NOBODY IS BORN WAY” because if they were it would be “unjust” for a just God to sentence them to hell for being that way because it would be beyond their control. *The scriptures ask these questions, “Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?” (Jer. 13:23)”…of course NOT so therefore they CAN’T be held accountable or penalized for THE WAY THEY WERE BORN! Homosexuals (gays/lesbians) themselves, CHANGED THE TRUTH OF GOD INTO A LIE and serve themselves more than the Creator (Romans 1:18-25). This pastor would be a “hypocrite” to partipate in #44′s foolishness…”we shouldn’t desire friendships that cause us to compromise our relationship with the Lord by blatantly disobeying His Word”. As a matter of fact, no one who names Jesus the Christ as their personal Lord and Savior should be there now that they know the truth about #44 and his demonic agenda. Given a choice, I’d rather be a friend of God’s and anyone else’ enemy any day. We can’t promote God and satan too.

    • Evangelist Felisha Says:

Amen and I agree with you, and I am so glad and happy for your boldness to speak the truth in the evil day. Keep on standing for true holiness and righteousness the God way!!!! Be blessed.

    • stephanieb Says:

Say so ElderLS, Say so! I so agree with your comments, and while the pastor should have never accepted the invitation to begin with, I am glad that he used his discernment and eventually declined. Sometimes it gets hard, but we have to stand firm on the Word of God, even if we get persecuted or feel like we are missing out on something, because being a friend to the world makes us an enemy of the Lord.

  11. HB Says:

I say, Jesus come NOW! There is way toooooo much craziness going on in the world right now! Not just with the world pushing homosexuality to be acceptable, the economy swirling down the toilet, widespread corruption on the local, state and national level, many chronic diseases now affecting CHILDREN! and the prevalence of tomfoolery, dog and pony shows going on within the church! And as time goes on, it’s gonna get worse!!!?

As for this minister choosing to take himself out of the inaguration ceremony, I betcha from this point on, he sees that preaching against sin (like homosexuality) is within the range of his priorities as a messenger of God’s uncompromising word! I pray that he is bolder in that endeavor.

  12. servant of God Says:

I pity those so call pastors who wants to put their hands on Obama inauguration to pray with all his sodomites into the white house, what kind of prayer you think? Abomination.

  13. RAW Says:

Giglio hasn’t preached against this abomination for the last 15-20 years? Did I read that right? At least 55 million children have died through abortion since 1973, and this isn’t a priority to be preached against? You don’t want to pray for the shedding of innocent blood to end? I agree with Cross Bearer, many pastors and Christians have become compromising cowards, scared to speak the truth. They go to church every Sunday and still supported Obama. All they cared about was getting a check from the government. Even when you tell them the truth about abortion, they didn’t care. They said it’s not an issue. That’s a shame.

  14. fidel Says:

Just as the homosexual stands for his beliefs,we as Christian individuals are wrong for standing for our beliefs. So we should compromise ours to make them feel good and accepted.love sinner hate the sin.is what the word of GOD says.so keep standing, and after all is done continue to stand!!

    • Evangelist Felisha Says:

Yes love the person or individual and hate the sin that they are in!!! compromise nothing against what God the living Lord says!!!!!

  15. rebecca Says:

    Shocking!

  16. CROSS BEARER Says:

That Pastor is a COMPROMISING COWARD. He hasn’t PREACHED on SODOMITES in 15 years??? Mr. Blanco a WICKED FILTHY SODOMITE has REPLACED Mr. Giglio as the SPEAKER. This was PLANNED by the OBAMA team to FURTHER SOLIDIFY his ALLIANCE with the SODOMITES. What MORE does God have to show the CHURCHES who RAN to the POLLS to VOTE him BACK in OFFICE??? I am TIRED of these FAKE CHRISTIANS. I have BROTHERS & SISTERS dying in CHINA & AFRICA for the REAL GOSPEL of JESUS CHRIST.

    • Evangelist Felisha Says:

Amen, my brother I totally agree with you on this issue of the President and his compromise to these sodomites and these fair weathered so called lukewarm christians here in America.. But when God the righteous Lord execute His righteous vengence upon this nation, then we who are obedient and have not wavered are sold out to tis worlds compromising lure will be divinely protected and saved.. Be blessed and keep the true faith andf holiness of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.Blessings to you.

  17. Dave, RN Says:

Wait… he CHOSE to not participate?
This is why we’re going down the tube. People CHOOSE to not participate and speak up. We need Pastors that will have the same mind as Jesus, make a fuss and SPEAK UP FOR MORALITY.
It’s time for some temple table turning. Not running away.

  18. Anthony Says:

I’m not so sure this pastor should be celebrated:

    a) He says, “Clearly, speaking on this issue has not been in the range of my priorities in the past fifteen years.”

    – My response is, “why not?” In 15 years you never preached against sin?

    b) I also find it odd that he mentions that homosexuality “isn’t God’s best”.
    - this is the same line Osteen fed America when on CNN

    c) He goes on to say, “Instead, my aim has been to call people to ultimate significance”
    - what exactly does he mean?

I would have much rather that he chose not to pray at BO’s inauguration because of BO’s support of gay marriage, abortion, etc.

And finally, had he went through with the prayer, he probably could not have mentioned Jesus’ name anyways…

In any event we as believers must stand strong. Be prepared to be labelled as “bigots”, “hateful” etc…it’s definitely coming…

    Be Blessed!
    Anthony

  19. EYES OF A WATCHMAN (EZEKIEL 33:6) Says:

I am reading the responses and NO it’s NOT good for HIM. He didn’t stand up for TRUTH. He was EXPOSED for the COWARD he is. (REVELATION 21:8) Clearly from his response he hasn’t preached on this WICKED SIN in over the last 15-20 years because he said it wasn’t a PRIORITY??? Ministers of the GOSPEL must PREACH the WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD. In order to PREACH it, PASTORS must LIVE it, so this doesn’t surprise me at all, and for the OBAMA team to REPLACE him with RICHARD BLANCO who is a WICKED SODOMITE with no SHAME in his WICKEDNESS is a SURE SIGN to ALL that Mr. OBAMA has NEVER BEEN a REAL CHRISTIAN. He can TAKE his OATH on Dr. Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln’s Bibles, but Mr. OBAMA will be JUDGED SEVERELY for all of the INNOCENT BLOOD SHED through Planned Parenthood and ENDORSING SODOMITES to be together if he DOESN”T REPENT of THESE EVIL SINS. Woe unto the NATION that FORGETS GOD. RIGHTEOUSNESS EXALTS a NATION, but SIN is a REPROACH to ANY PEOPLE. The CHURCH HAS BEEN BLINDED by his SKIN COLOR, but JESUS said WHAT has BEEN EXALTED among MEN is an ABOMINATION to GOD. T.D. FAKES and ALL of the other UNGODLY PASTORS who stand with this MAN will RECEIVE the JUSTICE OF GOD. EZEKIEL 34:10 is SOON COMING for THESE WOLVES in the PULPIT, and JEREMIAH 5:29 is COMING for AMERICA, if Mr. OBAMA doesn’t REPENT and TURN to JESUS. God HEARS the CRIES of all the BABIES that have BEEN SLAUGHTERED and He sees the MASSIVE STREAMS of BLOOD from THESE PRECEIOUS CHILDREN. God WILL NOT be MOCKED!!!!!!! IF any of YOU are on the SIDE of MR. OBAMA, you need to REPENT!!!!

  20. yokana Says:

in uganda the public is the only thing that can fight gays… not the government

  21. Zounds Of Joy Says:

There’s no surprise here!!! You know who voted for!!!
Even who you didn’t vote, you made a choice. Rather than standing up for the TRUTH in (Gods) Holy-Word.

You decide to be on the sidelines and allow these “queers” to SWAG on. Better get your “swag” on cuz it may be your LAST time. Like the days of NOAH.

They say he was crazy for doing what he did. Calling it out for what it really was or is. As the (God) of Jacob directed.

But like the “Pharisees and Sadducees” Who “SWAG” there way into the hearts of the incident and those who have turn a blind eye to the word of (God) and “Do as thou wilt.”

In-conclusion, most of us know how the story ENDS! I’ll give you a hint……….ONLY A FEW survived.

    • michelle Says:

So you voted for the mormon? Mormonism isn’t biblical….

      • Zounds Of Joy Says:

My vote is on the [Word of God], NOT man. (Jesus) is my President.!!& King & Lord & Savior –

        Simply put: My EVERYTHING!!!!

He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken….(Psalm 62:6)

  22. Jesus' Daughter Says:

Why would any Pastor want to do the inauguration prayer anyway? Jesus is no where in the government as a whole. Of course people can be redeemed, but the system is anti-Christ. He’s not “blessing” the president with his demonic self!

    • God's daughter Says:

So true… No matter who the people would have voted for, both are evil. I am just disgusted by all the pastors that wasted precious time urging the people to vote instead of preaching the gospel. The Kingdom of heaven is at hand! Woe unto these pastors that preach not the gospel!

Anybody with discernment would have known that Barak was going to win again; he had just started making all of his changes… All of the parties are really on the same team! Even a blind man can see that… Their job is to deceive the masses and make them think that their vote really counts. Wake up! Too many are sleeping…

  23. Toccara Says:

    Good for him!

  24. niya Says:

I’m not watching the show anyway. just another diversion to keep the masses blinded to what’s really going on and who’s really leading this nation.

  25. judy milner Says:

Good for him unless God had given him a specific word to pursue, his “choice” and explaination of why he doesnt want to be involved is fine. This homosexual agenda is so demonic, delusional and deceptive that God has to give you divine wisdom and strength to go in. They are using the guise of unity to promote their perversion. It is horrific to witness but understood that it is truly a sign of the times.
